FORMING - BENDING
Exceptional accuracy
Bending is one of the most widely used plastic deformation processes in metalworking, in which a material is shaped by the controlled application of forces without changing the volume or thickness of the workpiece. This technological process is fundamental to the creation of a variety of components and structures, from simple brackets and profiles to complex pipe systems and housings for industrial equipment. Bending allows the transformation of flat workpieces into three-dimensional shapes with high accuracy and excellent repeatability.
Physico-mechanical foundations of the process
Bending is based on the principle of plastic deformation, in which a material deforms irreversibly under the influence of applied forces. During bending, complex stresses arise - tensile stresses on the outside of the bend and compressive stresses on the inside. The neutral zone, where the stresses are zero, shifts to the inside of the bend due to the different behavior of the material under tension and compression.
The quality of bending depends on many factors – the mechanical properties of the material, the bending radius, the thickness of the workpiece, the direction of the fibers in the material and the technology used.
Classification of bending methods
Free bending is performed between three points – two support points and one load point. This method is universal and allows bending at different angles with one tool, but provides lower accuracy in large series. Caliber bending uses special dies and punches that determine the exact shape of the bend, ensuring high accuracy and repeatability.
Rotational bending is a specialized method for forming tubes and profiles, in which the blank is bent around a stationary die through a rotational movement. Rolling uses a system of rollers to gradually bend sheet materials into cylindrical or conical shapes.
Tools and equipment
Modern bending equipment includes a variety of machines – from manual benders to fully automated CNC centers. Hydraulic presses provide great force and precise control, especially suitable for bending thick materials and large workpieces. Pneumatic systems are effective for lighter operations and high-speed production.
CNC sheet metal benders represent the pinnacle of technology, providing programmable control of all parameters – force, position, speed and sequence of operations. These machines often include automatic angle measurement and correction.
Materials and limitations
Bending can be applied to a wide range of materials – from mild steels and aluminum alloys to high-strength steels and titanium alloys. Each material has specific characteristics that determine the minimum bending radii and the required technological parameters.
The minimum bending radius is a critical parameter that depends on the thickness of the material, its mechanical properties and the rolling direction. Exceeding critical values can lead to the formation of cracks or irregularities.
Quality control and accuracy
Bending quality is controlled by precise measurement of angles, radii and geometric dimensions. Modern systems include laser and optical measuring devices that provide real-time feedback.
3D scanning is increasingly used for complex control of complex bent parts, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries.
Innovations and future trends
The development of bending is aimed at greater automation, integration with robotic systems and the use of artificial intelligence for process optimization. Adaptive management allows automatic correction of parameters according to measured results.
Bending remains a key process in modern manufacturing, constantly evolving to meet the increasing demands for accuracy, efficiency and flexibility in industrial production.
